It's amazing what people will sell and buy on E-Bay. Frined of mine sold his 20yo little league ball glove on E-Bay. Actually got $40 for it. You could have gone to K-Mart (where he bought it 20 years ago) and bought the same glove (only newere) for $20.

Most sellers..when it comes to altec drivers are clueless..that can be a good thing. In this case he must think they are Edgewound with Platium & the magnets are gold.
I saw a while back someone was trying to sell a beat 2shit pair of 417's for over $350 WTH?

Wonder how much extra for the freight from Spain to Co.? I'd sure sell all mine for a price like that, and replace them for a third of that.

I don't think it's as much a lack of awareness of GPA, or their quality or likeness to OEM, as it is an avoidance of recones in general, something that's gone on so long it would be pretty hard to change. I think it's mainly caused by being unable (in most cases) to verify how close a match the recone is to the original, as the reconers and their suppliers keep that info under tight wraps. What few people realize though, is that there are only a few companies that ACTUALLY MANUFACTURE cones, spiders, etc., and they're the same companies that supply the parts to BOTH the OEM retailer, AND the reconer, (United and Waldom have made the bulk for 50 years), so if the reconer selects the right parts, they're often exactly the same parts as OEM. In some cases, the materials used are different, due to inavailabilty or improvements made in 30 years, but the end result is the same. In other cases, there are still quantities of parts left from the original production overruns. Ever wonder why you never see cone molds or presses in the pictures of your favorite factory? It's 'cause they don't make those parts, they buy 'em, built to whatever spec they want, in contract lots. It's a little hard to swallow, but the parts for most of our favorite speakers were made in the same plants as the cheapest, low quality, bargain brands.

Lacking ways to prove that a reconed speaker was done with the correct parts, the only option left to convince a potential customer that the unit performs to spec is to show test results comparable to OEM specs (which are also unavailable in many cases), something few seem willing to go to the trouble to do, so the buyer either chooses an "original" at a premium price, or the recone at a considerable discount, even though the recone may likely outperform and far outlast the original.
